Hit & Mrs, Lorong Kurau, Bangsar, KL

Hit & Mrs is The BIG Group's fine dining restaurant located in Lorong Kurau, Bangsar. Helming the kitchen here are chefs Keith and Edmund, previously working with André Chiang in Singapore before moving back to Malaysia.

The restaurant serves modern cuisine in a casual, cosy environment. Dining here got me delirious with joy as the food is what I love about fine dining restaurants - the food here excited my palate and every plate was a work of art.

But before we started our meal, we visit the Mrs side, the Malayan-inspired bar upstairs to enjoy a cocktail. A really cool space, with old-school furnishings - a place to unwind as the bartender whips up a drink for you. I went for the Mojito Malaya (RM40) which is made with pandan-infused Angostura Reserva rum, gula melaka, mint, lime and orange. Hubby's Fino Intro (RM30) consists of fino sherry, sweet vermouth, maraschino cherry, angustura bitter and lemon twist served in a cocktail glass. We sip on our cocktails as the sun sets. The bar opens from 5pm through to 1am.

Appropriately feels like we're in the tropics

After we finished our drinks, we headed downstairs to the restaurant for dinner. The restaurant is cosy with a courtyard in the back and an open kitchen. The restaurant is only open for dinners on weekdays as well as brunch on weekends. The menu changes monthly, and diners can choose to order a la carte or have the 5-course tasting menu for RM148++. We were told that one item from each course is retained and featured for 3 months, based on its popularity as well as uniqueness of the dish.

Romantic mood

Amuse bouche - salmon, cucumber salsa, apple puree

For our review, we sampled the tasting menu as well as the 3 chef's recommended dishes. Beetroot Confit (RM35) was the most interesting and unique dish of the evening. Both the presentation and taste is exquisite. The most surprising element of this dish is the goat cheese snow (ie frozen goat's cheese), a refreshing choice for the hotter climate of KL. Lots of textures, flavour and colours, this was a delight to savour and got our tastebuds singing.

Beetroot Confit - orange, raspberry, pink radish and goat cheese

For the tasting menu, I started with the Scottish salmon (RM35), whereby salmon is served three-ways - salmon teriyaki, salmon with sesame and salmon tartare. The first two were slow cooked, sous-vide style. The salmon was luscious, and my favorite was the salmon teriyaki. The salmon was served with capellini topped with ikura (salmon roe), konbu and seaweed cracker. It is great to finally see Scottish salmon served in a KL restaurant, definitely superior in taste and quality.

Next on the tasting menu is the rich and creamy sweet onion soup (RM35) served with brioche chips and truffle oil. Love the caramelised onions in the soup. The third course is the green pea risotto (RM45) - very delicious and loving the different textures from the sugar pea and woodear mushroom. In the centre is a soft grilled risotto cake.

The two mains we had were impressive. The black cod (RM85) was perfectly cooked, sweet and flaky. It was served with fennel risotto (no rice here), tomato and rice cracker. Love the crunch from the fennel.  The lamb rack (RM90) was perfectly pink, tender and flavorful, served with eggplant done three ways, tomato confit and goat's milk. If we weren't in a fine dining restaurant, I would definitely have picked up that lamb cutlet and licked it clean.

Pre-dessert - sourdough ice cream, lemon curd and lemon financier

For desserts, the pineapple (RM25) definitely captivated my heart. Coconut sorbet, spice jelly, pineapple carpaccio in a pineapple soup was a great sweet ending to the meal. Tomatoes (RM25) is an interesting mix of savoury and sweet, with the five spice sponge, raspberry sorbet, and tomato puree.

We had a fantastic meal here, and it's been a while since a fine dining establishment in KL has left such a big impression on me. Currently one of my Top 5 fine dining establishments in KL. Can't wait to return here again.
