Japanese Yee Sang + Teppanyaki Delights @ Hanare KL

This year, Chinese New Year falls two days after Valentine's Day. So, head over to Hanare Japanese Restaurant for a double celebration with their festive yee sang and exquisite Japanese cuisine.

Toss to prosperity, good health and wealth with one of two Japanese Yee Sangs on offer. What we love about the yee sang here is that it is made with all-natural ingredients and the dressing is made in-house by the chefs, using sesame paste from Japan.

The Yee Sang consists of ingredients such as cucumber, pear, carrots, pomelo, red cabbage, beetroot, coriander and crushed peanuts and they use fried Japanese gyoza skin in lieu of crackers to represent "a floor full of gold". Diners have the option of going for the regular or large and for topping, they can go for hotate (scallop) or salmon.

It was BabySumoKids' first Yee Sang for the Year of the Dog, so they were super excited! We had the Hotate Yee Sang (RM118 for regular) which comfortably fed our family of 4. The Yee Sang was fresh, healthy and delicious! The sesame dressing was really good, and a lovely change from the regular plum sauce. And the fact that it was topped with fresh, raw scallop sashimi made it all the better for me! :)

Ready for their first toss!

You can watch the tossing video on my Instagram.

When you order Teppanyaki at Hanare, you don't just get a meal, you get to witness the chef showcase his skills too. Chef Gary, the teppanyaki chef at Hanare, has over 30 years experience under his belt. Make sure you ask for a counter seat so you get to watch all the action - the chef put on quite a show for us. We ooh-ed and ahh-ed our way throughout lunch, not only the kids (but us too!) were mesmerised.

From his amazing egg-slicing skills to the flaming teppanyaki beef, it was super fun and entertaining to watch; we enjoyed every minute of our amazing teppanyaki experience here.

We ordered a Seafood Teppanyaki Lunch Set (RM75) for the kids, which came with a selection of premium seafood (2 prawns, 1 humongous scallop, salmon fillet and 2 oysters). All lunch sets come with appetizer, salad, chawanmushi (steamed egg custard), rice, miso soup, pickles and dessert. Everything was well-prepared and delicious, and the kids especially love the salmon and scallop. The prawns are topped with chef's special homemade mayo.

Dessert for the kids... matcha pudding with matcha ice cream

We also shared the Tokusen Supreme Wagyu Course, from the a la carte menu. Diners can choose from either A4 Ribeye Cap, A5 Sirloin, Kobe or Matsuzaka beef. This course starts with a duo of appetizer, followed by a refreshing crab meat salad. We went for the Kobe beef (RM470) and for the course, you will get a 120g portion. Just looking at the well-marbled meat made my heart flutter.

Kobe Beef

The chef did a fantastic job cooking the beef - it was cooked to our preferred doneness, simply perfect. Melt-in-the-mouth, juicy and tender beef with a very nice sear and crust. Loved it!

This is served with mixed vegetables and fried rice with garlic, as well as a clear soup. For dessert, you will get the seasonal fruit of the day, so we got the Japanese melon... so juicy! BabySumoKids remembered this from our last visit and requested for a piece each...lol.

If you're looking for some tableside grilling action, try the Fujisan Yougan Ishiyaki, aka Mount Fuji lava stone hot plate. Select your meat from  A4 Ribeye Cap, A5 Sirloin, Kobe or Matsuzaka beef or you can go for a Combination platter which comes with 30g of each of the supreme Wagyu cuts. There is also a more pocket-friendly Australian Wagyu platter for RM180.

We had the Combination Platter (RM430), so we could taste each type of beef. There will be 2 slices of each cut, with the Matsuzaka being the most marbled and buttery in texture. First you will need to rub the hot plate with the Wagyu fats and each piece takes just seconds to grill. We love it just with a sprinkling of salt, to enjoy the beautiful flavours of the Wagyu. So sinful!
